Our Delivery Story

Wow, what a crazy four days it has been! If you don't know by now, we have welcomed a new member into our family. Landry Tigh Lofgren was born on May 6, 2010 at 4:22. He weighed a nice 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. I must say it was quite a journey, with some ups and downs, but now we are on our way back up and getting used to life with the THREE of us.

Our journey began on Wednesday morning when we went to St. Agnes at 5:30 a.m. for our induction appointment. Once we were checked in I was given cervadil which was supposed to help thin my cervix and help me dilate...at this point I was only dilated to a 1. Cervadil is a 12 hour medication...so Wednesday was a lot of laying in a hospital bed, watching t.v., reading magazines, and hoping that there was some progress being made. At around 8:00 that night, I was taken off of the cervadil and put on pitocin. The pitocin was supposed to stimulate contractions so that I would further dilate and our little guy would hopefully be born. Now, with the pitocin came no more food! The nursing staff continued to increase the levels of pitocin to help stimulate stronger contractions and further dilation. By about midnight I was dilated to a 2...yup...a whole whoppin' 2!

At that point my OB came in and broke my water. That is when the real fun began...can you sense the sarcasm? Almost immediately my contractions got very strong. I quickly asked for the epidural and after about an hour and a half of misery...praise the lord...the epidural was given. The nursing staff continued to raise my pitocin levels until I was dilated to a 4 at 4:00 Thursday morning. Then they noticed that if they raised the levels anymore, it would stress out Landry and they would have to drop them back down.

We continued to play this game of raising and lowering the pitocin levels until I was dilated to a 7 at around 9 a.m. That is where we stopped. From 9:00-noon on Thursday I didn't dilate any further. So the decision was then made to have a c-section! There were 3 surgeries scheduled before us and then it would be our turn. Now that we were doing a c-section that meant that not only could I no longer eat...I could no longer drink anything as well. Keep in mind, I hadn't eaten anything since before 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday...it was now 1:00 on Thursday!

The surgery went very well. Dr. Mason is the greatest and I cannot tell you how impressed I was by my husband as he stood there and watched as Dr. Mason pointed out each step to him...CRAZY!
